This is most definitely a new favorite quote.  I have added Theodore Zeldin to a growing list of sociologists and historians I need to read.  This one seems particularly apt for our time and my work on Tummeling:

"To be a catalyst is the ambition most appropriate for those who see the world as being in constant change, and who, without thinking that they can control it, wish to influence its direction."    - Theodore Zeldin
