At a recent 'tech-girl geek get together' [whose members are sworn to secrecy to protect their innocence identities], this precise subject was raised with rolled eyes - yes, link-love is important to get noticed, but with patience, perserverance and just plain unique good comments, good content and good niches seem to "miraculously" find each other.
